Scared of telling your family and friends about your blog?

Why did I create this post?

Because I was terrified, to say the least. And I honestly think that I am not alone in this. The problem is, nobody is talking about it out loud, yet it is quite a common feeling that new bloggers experience.

A part of me didn’t want to publish this because it is such a personal post but I published it after all because I do want to help you find the right solution to this dilemma. A solution that is suitable for you because hey, we’re all different (or should I say unique). l wished that someone could’ve helped me back then and encourage me but I was so afraid to show my blog to anyone other than complete strangers.

I was also afraid of reaching out to other bloggers. I am sorry I called you a stranger. You know that I didn’t mean it like that, don’t you?

If there is anything more you want to ask me after reading this post, you are welcome to leave a comment or send me an email and I will respond to you as soon as I can.

After all, I am here for you.

I had never believed before this could be an issue for a blogger. Not until I turned into one myself. Today I know a thing or two about the anxiety of telling your partner, family or even close friends about your blog.

Why does it bother us so much?

The first thing that comes to my mind is your personality type. It is so much easier for an extrovert to share their ideas with other persons than it is with an introvert. They don’t have this fear of what others might say or feel embarrassed to speak out loud about their ideas. So their job is a lot easier than it is for us.

I think of myself as an introvert (like many other bloggers out there) and many times feel very uncomfortable to share my own projects with other people, especially with people that are very close to me.

I couldn’t help but think that they wouldn’t like it, that they would make fun of it or think it is a stupid idea. I know I am exaggerating here a little bit but you probably get the idea.

However, I haven’t got the slightest problem sharing this information with you, my reader. Most likely you are a new blogger or someone who is just about to start a blog.

Whatever it is, I know you get me.

My family doesn’t read blogs or know anything about blogging. So fear of their concern/criticism/misunderstandings was my number one reason for hiding my blog from them.

What are you most afraid of? Tell me about it, please. I would love to talk to you!

In general, we just don’t want our close friends and family to follow our blog from DAY ONE.

Because what we want is for them to see our success, not our failures.

I still see myself as a newbie with all the newbie mistakes and that is totally FINE.

Flaws are OK, it is what you learn from, it is where you grow from.

Every day I am trying, learning different things to improve my writing, promoting and designing this blog in general. It’s a process. It takes time. But still, for now, I feel much more relaxed if no one from my family sees what I am posting in my first couple of months.

And what I really, REALLY don’t like is being asked too many questions about my blog in way: how is it going with your blog, how many people did read your blog this month, etc. It just puts an additional pressure to me and we don’t need more pressure, do we?

What should you do about it then?

You can follow my example if that is what you feel of course. So if you really believe that knowing of your family will in some way be a threat to your blogging consistency or your blog’s success, and you simply aren’t comfortable with them following your every step of a way as a beginner, then don’t tell them.

Because if you feel this way, it will affect your blog. Simple as that.

Believe me, I have had a conversation with a few bloggers who shared their blog posts with family/friends. You wouldn’t believe how many of them gave up or wanted to give up just because they didn’t get the support they were hoping for. Or they didn’t feel comfortable about writing personal things and their blog kind of died off.

Blogging takes time and effort, especially if it isn’t just a hobby anymore and you’re treating it like a business. But your family and your spouse want you to have enough time for them.

I know that families want what is best for you but sadly many times they have no idea what is best for you.

You and only you know what is best for you.

In the end, it is totally your decision whether you want to tell them or not.

If you do decide to tell them about blogging, I definitely advise you to keep your blog’s name for yourself a while. At least do that.

They don’t have to follow your every step because you will not have the time nor the energy to report to them your blog’s progress all the time.

They will never understand what blogging means to you, as much as you do.   And never forget there are people around you who won’t like the idea of you doing something more for yourself and your life and will try to ruin it for you.

Keep that in mind and be careful about it when starting your blogging business. People can be very jealous.   But luckily other people can also be very kind and helpful, so try to connect with fellow bloggers as yourself to support each other.

What about me personally?

After a while (a few months) I told my boyfriend, family and just a few close friends (and I don’t mean FB friends) about starting a blog.

They would notice something eventually.

However, I explained that I don’t feel comfortable sharing my blog/website’s name with them yet as I am just a beginner and it would be a little awkward if they read my blog (before anyone else does, haha).

My consistency and motivation would suffer if they knew of every step I make, not to mention of every mistake I make. I made a promise to them and myself that when the right time comes I will be happy to show them my own ‘product’. They accepted that and I really hope they remain patient (though it seems unlikely sometimes).

Reaching so many people in order to define my blog as a successful blog could take months, maybe years. I will have to dedicate my time to writing, learning and blogging and because of it I will spend less time with my family. I really hope this goes well further on.

Thank you for putting my thoughts about sharing my blog with others into words. My blog is almost two years old and for the first 8-9 months, I told no one about it. Eventually, I started sharing with close friends and family because I started to feel guilty about not sharing what was becoming a huge part of my life. I also started to feel the need to talk about it. The response so far has been completely positive. Right now I am debating whether or not I should do a general announcement on my Facebook page. So many of my friends announce their projects with seemingly no reservations and in a way I want to be a part of that.

Hey Erica! I still haven’t announced my blog to my Facebook friends and I am not sure when I’ll do this. Probably not this year haha. I know some people have already found me but not the majority of them. This is not something I would recommend though because it’s not the most ‘freeing’ thing to hide your blog. It’s just that I am not ready to do that yet. Good luck with your blogging journey!
